Don’t Just Stare Out of the Window! 6 Road Trip Game Ideas for Adults

Road trips can be long and torturous sometimes, but all you need are great road trip games. Here are 6 road trip game ideas that adults will love.

Road tripping is one of the best things you can do with your friends.

Is there a better way to get to know someone than to spend hours driving across the country with them? We don’t think so, but there are countless examples in literature, film, and history of timeless friendships forged on the road.

It can get a bit boring sometimes, though. There’s only so much conversation you can have with the same people before you run out of things to talk about. That’s why you need to play games to pass the time.

Road Trip Game Ideas for Adults

Now that we can get any song we want or download a podcast about any conceivable topic, games have fallen by the wayside. Well, we’re not having it. We’re bringing back road trip games with a vengeance.

1. License Plate Game

The license plate game is a highway classic that’s simple to play. There are a few takes on it, but our favorite is this:

All the participants choose different 6-letter words (the number of letters in the word doesn’t matter, but they all have to be the same amount). Then, as you’re driving along, you find the letters of your word (in order) on the license plates that you pass. The first person to spell their word wins.

2. 21 Questions

Let’s take this old school party game to the road. 21 questions is another super simple game that anyone can play.

One person has a thought. It could be anything; a concept, a person, an object, anything. The other people in the car take turns asking questions until someone guesses what the thought is. As you might have guessed, the group only has 21 questions to figure out the answer. Whoever guesses correctly is the next person to have the thought.

3. Battle of the Bands

“Battle of the Bands” is a great way to get to know your fellow road trippers’ taste in music. Here’s how it works:

The person/people judging chooses a random category. Then, two contestants have 60 seconds to choose a song that relates to that category. After the 60 seconds is up, both songs play, and the other people in the car judge the selections to determine the winner.

4. Word Association

Here’s another classic for any occasion, but it’s a great time killer in the car.

Basically, one person has to blurt out a word, then the next person says a word associated with it, and so on. For example, you might start with “garden”, then the next person would say “salad”, then “dressing”, then “changing rooms”. You get the idea. When someone says something ridiculous, you start over.

5. Fortunately, Unfortunately

This one is for the storytellers out there.

In “Fortunately, Unfortunately”, your goal is to weave a tale, sentence by sentence. One person starts by saying “Fortunately”, followed by the beginning of the story. The next person follows by saying “Unfortunately”, and continuing the story.

You go back and forth like that, making the story more and more ridiculous until someone can’t think of what to say or they’re too busy laughing.

6. Would You Rather

Our last game is “would you rather”. If you haven’t played before, it’s pretty easy, but you can once again learn a lot about the people you’re in the car with.

One person starts by asking a simple this or that question. For example, “Would you rather read all of Shakespeare’s sonnets or paint an entire house by yourself?”

The other person answers the question and gives a brief explanation of why they chose one thing over the other. After a while, you’ll know everything about your friends.
