It’s not uncommon for people to search for stay-at-home jobs right out of college.
The simplicity of working from home can be a great contrast to the energetic confusion of college life. Not only that, but the skills needed for these jobs are often the same ones we’ve been perfecting during the past few years at college.
Regardless of reasons, working from home is quite popular, with about 2% of the workforce currently working from home. With a decent amount of the population working from home, it should come as no surprise that there are some great stay-at-home jobs out there.
We’ll talk about some of them in the paragraphs below.
1. Virtual Assistant
A virtual assistant is someone who performs necessary tasks for a company. Oftentimes, these will be of a clerical nature, like filling out paperwork.
However, they’re not all like that, and the more skills you have, the more marketable you’ll be in the field. For instance, some companies want an assistant to help with their social media presence, while others want someone who can do marketing or web design.
Many virtual assistants choose to focus their work on one specific skill set or industry.
Some get paid up to $20 per hour. Not bad for a job fresh out of college.
2. Teacher/Tutor
Do you want to teach and inspire the children of the world? Do you also not want to leave your couch? Then an online teacher or tutor might be the job for you.
Students attending school online is starting to become a trend across all grades, so the industry is always looking for more teachers. This is especially true if you happen to be an ESL teacher.
English is one of the most recognized languages in the world, and people from many different cultures are being encouraged to learn it.
Many of these opportunities are coming from Asia. A lot of this demand comes from China.
There can be some contractual and legal pitfalls with this job, so we encourage you to do your research before committing to anything. That being said, a lot of the more serious issues are avoided by teaching online rather than traveling to China to teach.
3. Writer/Editor
The internet is huge. Pages upon pages of new content is being created every day, yet there’s still a growing demand for more.
If you’ve ever dreamed of being a writer, the internet is a great way to do it. Most writing work is freelance, but there’s enough out there to make a decent living at it. Plus, people are looking for writing on a wide variety of different topics, so you may never have to write about something you’re not interested in.
It’s not just writers that the industry needs, either. There’s also a market for editors and proofreaders. You may think that various computer tools and programs have taken away the need for editors, but they haven’t.
In spite of all the advancements we’ve made in the field of AI, there’s still a limit to what computers are capable of. Many of them still make mistakes and haven’t quite picked up on how people actually speak and write.
4. Transcriptionist
A transcriptionist is not a good job for someone who’s hard of hearing or can’t type very quickly. The job entails listening to an audio recording of an event, often a medical appointment, and writing ‘subtitles’ for it.
This helps with the record-keeping aspect of the medical industry. It’s also worth keeping in mind that if you’re working as a medical transcriptionist, you’re going to need to learn the names of medicines and medical procedures. They will come up quite a bit.
5. Child Care
This may not be what comes to mind when you think of stay-at-home jobs, but it’s a great opportunity, especially if you want to work with kids. Running a childcare business from your home can be very lucrative.
Plus, if you have younger siblings, kids of your own, or earned money babysitting, then you already have some experience in the field. All there is to do now is advertise and make sure everything is legitimate.
To this end, you’ll need to look into what licenses and permits are required and how to get them.
6. Event Planning
An event planner is exactly what it sounds like. They are hired to manage the specifics of an event, like where it will take place and how the venue will be decorated.
This job may take you away from home at times, but much of your work will be done via phone or computer. A college degree in a related field, such as hospitality or business management, helps but is not required.
The only thing that is required is an organized and detail-oriented personality.
It’s up to you what events you’ll be working on. Many prefer to focus on weddings or parties, while others don’t limit themselves that much.
